The sun was setting over the horizon, cascading its colors over the sky. Brilliant reds and oranges shot across the sky like a battle between the day’s light and the evening’s dark was waging, and the evening colors were winning. Tabitha stood in her back yard, watching the colors as they brightened, then began to fade as the sun sank lower. Thinking she was alone, she was startled when a hand was placed on her shoulder, warming her entire body with one touch. She turned, looking up into Rodney’s eyes, shining blue, but reflecting the sun’s colors in them.

“I suppose you’re leaving on Sunday, then,” she whispers into the cool of the night.

He nods, “I am, but I promise, I will return to you someday soon.”

She turns, resting a hand on the back of his neck, and tangling the other in his hair. He recognized the action she only did when she felt like crying.

“Hey,” he whispered, lifting her chin so he could look into her dark brown eyes, “I promise I’ll always come home to you, Tabby. I promise.”

With that, he lay a gentle kiss on her lips, then rested his arms comfortably around her, holding her close and never wanting to let go.
